Lake Moraine is located in the beautiful Valley of the Ten Peaks in Banff National Park. This glacier-fed lake becomes the most intense and vivid shade of turquoise blue. The scenery of the majestic peaks of the surrounding mountains makes the scene almost surreal.
There are several walks around the lake ranging from accessible to more strenuous. The Rockpile Trail is a short and easy trail with curves along the back of the moraine to the top of the natural dam. The view from above is known as the "Twenty Dollar View", as the scene appears on the back of Canadian twenty dollar notes issued between 1969 and 1979.
During times of high grizzly activity, there are hiking restrictions for many of the trails in the Lake Moraine area.
