The caves originated from the pressure that subterranean currents exerted on the soft limestone for thousands of years. In many of them, from the sky and the ground, impressive stalactites and stalagmites, pointed cones of stratified rocks, formed by the dripping of water over centuries, appear. The walls of these caves are decorated with a galaxy of native fireflies.
The easiest way to see the caves is through a walking or boat tour. If you like adventure, live the unique experience of cave navigation, where you will move, swim and float in a rubber chamber. You can also descend into the darkness by rappelling or zip-lining. Whatever your option to explore Waitomo Caves, you will conclude that they are a wonder of nature.
