Montreal is the most important city in Quebec, although not the capital of the province, which is Quebec City. It is located in the south-eastern part of the country, on an island that has the same name as the city and is surrounded by the St. Lawrence and Prairies rivers. Montreal is one of the most lively and dynamic cities in North America and has a very rich culture and history.
Montreal is named after the Mont Royal hill that dominates the island and is located right next to the centre. However, it did not always have this name. The history of Montreal begins in 1642, when a group of French explorers built a settlement on the land that the city now occupies. They called it Ville-Marie and for years it was constantly attacked by the native Indians who lived there, but at the same time it managed to become an important commercial centre.
