Why study in a Regional Area in Australia?

If you want to extend your adventure in Australia because you have plans in the country, and you want to get your permanent residency, studying in a regional area will be the best option.

Regional areas are those specific geographic areas that are part of the Australian territory, which the Government promotes so that more people decide to move to live there.

Unlike big cities like Sydney, Brisbane or Melbourne. These areas need more citizens, since having a higher population index could enhance the development and progress of the regional area.

The zones that the Government stipulates as Regional Areas are:

  • Perth
  • Gold Coast
  • Adelaide
  • Sunshine Coast
  • Newcastle/ Lake Macquarie
  •  Wollongong  /Illawarra
  •  Geelong
  • Hobart
  • Canberra

Regional Australia: Incentives for studying in a Regional Area

Regional Australia is made up of 3 categories and offers regional incentives for people migrating to locations classified as Category 2 "Cities and major regional centres" or Category 3 "Regional centres and other regional areas". Category 1 "major cities" do not receive any regional incentives.

Among the incentives for international students to study in a regional area are:

  • International graduates with a Bachelor's degree or higher qualification from a regional campus of a registered institution will be eligible for an additional 2 years in Australia on a post-study work visa.
  • Priority in the negotiation of migration agreements of designated areas (DAMA) specific to the region. By studying in a regional area, after finishing your studies you can apply for a Temporary Graduate Visa.
  • They will have access to the 25,000 dedicated regional locations.
  • Priority processing of regional visas.
  • Access to the List of regional occupations (More positions work compared to non-regional lists).
  • International students studying at regional universities will be eligible for an additional year in Australia with a post-study work visa.

Learn more benefits of studying in a Regional Area

According to the Australian Department of Internal Affairs (DHS), from this year 2021 international students who are in a regional area can extend their post-study visas if they meet all the criteria.

Having studied and lived in these areas for two years, you will be able to apply for a visa extension of one or two more years:

  • Category 2 areas = 1 more year
  • Category 3 areas = 2 more years

According to DHS “Eligibility will include international students who studied at a regional campus of a metropolitan university. Additional post-study work arrangements will be available in 2021 and will require continuous residence in a regional area. "

This government initiative aims to attract more international qualified talents and help boost the country's economy and development. Qualified migrants are required who can enter the labour market through the employer-sponsored route. Australia needs migration to maintain its economic growth.
