Discover the recommendations for travelling by public transport in Victoria

If you live in Victoria, it is important that you know the recommendations for travelling by public transport. As the restrictions against COVID-19 are eased, it is important that you stay safe, so you should continue to maintain your physical distance from other people, take due hygiene precautions, avoid crowds, and not travel if you do not are you okay.

The number of passengers on board will not be limited, so it is important that you plan your trip in the best way and avoid transporting yourself by this means unless necessary.

More cleaning on trains, trams and buses:

Victoria Public Transport (PTV) has increased cleanliness, focusing on the places where passengers spend the most time, so they regularly clean the most contact surfaces, such as stop buttons, door handles, Myki contact points, handrails and tether straps.

In addition, trains, trams, buses, stations and stops are cleaned more thoroughly at night.

Tips for travelers:

Here are some tips to help you if you need to get from one place to another.

Before you travel

  • Plan ahead: Try using Journey Planner or the PTV app to get real-time departure times and information.
  • Don't travel if you don't feel well.
  • Practice good hygiene:
    • Wash your hands with soap and water before and after travelling.
    • Sneeze or cough into a tissue or the inside part of your elbow.
    • Discard tissues or personal items in containers located at stops and stations.
  • Download the app app and keep it active on the go.

Myki and ticket sales

Before playing, check your myki card in a machine to make sure it's recharged and ready to go.

The staff does not handle cash, but there are still many ways to recharge your myki or buy a ticket.

  • Recharge in myki machines located in all stations.
  • Use myki or fast recharge machines at stations.
  • Contact an authorized myki dealer, including all 7-Elevens.
  • Use a credit or debit card with staff.
  • Recharge online on the PTV website.

Regional customers on trains or buses can purchase their tickets using a credit or debit card with staff at any station or by visiting the V / Line website.

Cash can still be used at myki card vending machines located on the public transport network.

Find other alternatives to mobilize

If you are one of the many Victorians who have enjoyed walking or biking around their neighborhood during coronavirus restrictions, you might want to consider these two options if your ride is short. Hiking trails and travel time information are available in the PTV app.

Free early bird trips

Train passengers can take advantage of the free early bird ride before 7:15 a.m.

Physical distancing

When travelling on any of these public transports, keep your distance where you can and respect the free zone around the drivers.

  • Avoid busy services travelling outside of peak hours (7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.and 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.) and travel alone if you need to.
  • At stops, stay away from others who wait.
  • If it is raining, take an umbrella to avoid gathering under the shelters.
  • Wait for passengers to get off before boarding.
  • Do not hold on to the doors, they must be clear so that people can get on and off safely.
  • If the transportation you are expecting is full, wait for the next service.
  • If you need to use the elevator, consider waiting for an empty one to maintain a safe distance.
  • When using the escalator, try to stand four steps from the person in front of you.
